can we sit correctly and quietly for long? Such a question looks ridiculous. The point is that we are unable to sit crrectly for long. We get uncomfortable. We shuffle and shift as some part of the body pains or gets numb. The back always slumps forward. the head bends. The abdomen gets loose and relaxed. At the mind level it is still worst. We are unable to maintain quietness and peace. We start thinking "Why sit too long?" "Why sit too long?" "Why not be doing something else?"

Sitting at one spot correctly quietly steadily by becoming introverted and peaceful is not easy.

There is a different kind of experience that can happen if one can sit peacefully for long. This was real story of a young boy in a small town Dudhagaon in Maharashtra. He would sit often near the water tank in a quiet posture for long. The parents got worried and married him off early. However after some time the boy sitting in meditation pose/remained in that very pose and never got up at all. The Villagers were scared and Yoga was looked down upon. None had cared to understand what the boy did and none tried to help him earlier.

Buddha when frustrated about the material world and its painful nature sat in Padmasana under the Bodhi tree Watching his breathing quietly and peacefully with determination to search an answer as to why was there pain and suffering in this world. He continued this practice for long and at the end found the answer which constitutes his Path of Buddhism.

One becomes quiet, clear-headed, peaceful and enlightened.

The meditation postures have their own virtue provided they are done correctly and meaningfully for long.

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali by Smt. Hansaji J Yogendra
Chapter III Sutra 48

Here we are discussing the Siddhis that are controlling the senses , the sense objects and the viewer. One is able to transcend the sense and is able to go beyond it. These kind of perfections make the individual a superior being . These kind of Siddhis are called as Madhupratika. One as if confirms the limitation of Prakrti and is a master of everything related to material world. One can reach physically any place with the speed of mind, Vikarana Bhav means a capacity to as if experience sensory stimuli even though not present, one can see a distant object without the use of the eye. There is an overcoming of the cause and effect relationship.

The highest control over senses and transcending the laws of nature are all leading to conquest of matter.

Easy Concentration by Mother Sita Devi
Select a place which is quiet. Spread a mat and sit in Ardhapadmasana or semi lotus pose (sitting cross legged in oriental fashion). Any comfortable sitting posture may be tried. Keep a glassful of water in one hand; steady this hand on the respective thigh keeping the glass of water far from the knee. Rest the other hands on the lap as convenient. The water in the glass should be full to the brim i.e. it could not contain even a drop more without overflowing.

Fix the eyes on the rim of the glass and try to keep the glass unmoved. Relax your body except the spine. Forget the other objects, see for how long you can maintain steadiness. Inattention would mean failure for the glass would immediately incline to one side and the water is bound to overflow. If one is able to maintain steadiness for a period of twenty minutes the same may be regarded as a fair progress.
